My name is Shauna Sweeney; I’m a singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist.
I’m originally from Connecticut, grew up in a “white picket fence” town. I started singing as a kid and wrote my first song at age 6, an upbeat number called “A Long Time Ago”. I was lucky to attend an excellent public school with a unique and wonderful arts program, where I was encouraged to write and record songs throughout elementary school.
At age 14 I moved to Fort Lauderdale, and started attending folk concerts, local music festivals and coffeehouse open mics. I saw how writing songs is not just for kids. A couple friends showed me my first guitar chords, and by 15 I was hitting the open mic circuit. By 16, I had joined a dedicated local band, Never Enough. We recorded an EP together but then grew apart.
I attended Emerson University in Boston MA as a communications major, later transferring to Stetson University in Deland FL as a business major. Still unclear about what I wanted to pursue, I moved from there to Chicago and worked for a time. It was at an open mic night in Chicago that I realized music was what I needed in my life. I moved back to South Florida, started singing with friends’ bands and soon I was making my living performing full-time.
Since then I’ve had the opportunity to perform almost 2000 shows across the Eastern U.S., Canada, the Bahamas, and the U.S. Naval base in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. I’ve played at festivals and amphitheaters, sharing venues with Dave Matthews Band, the Backstreet Boys and Matt Nathanson. I’ve collaborated with Grammy-winning musicians to independently produce and release 3 original EPs, in 2005, 2006 and 2010. My songs were featured by USA Today, Kotaku.com and the Miami Sun Sentinel. I’ve performed at events for the Miami Dolphins, Miami Marlins, Tom’s Shoes, the PGA Tour and the Brothers in Arms Foundation. Each of these shows and experiences was a unique and special honor.
These days I’m living in Fort Lauderdale, playing shows, writing and performing songs that I feel excited about, working with people I admire, and hopefully encouraging others to pursue their own passions and imaginations!
